Barrow in Bloom Bronze

Barrow upon Humber has received a brilliant accolade from the East Midlands in Bloom judges. The village entered the competition this year for the first time and has received a Bronze Award for the village and a special Judge’s award for the renovated village pump and flower bed situated near the Beck. Judges Jo Tarrant and Peter Benham visited the village in July.  They were escorted around the village by Parish Councillor Irene Ballam and visited several sites including the Bowls Green, the Market Square, the renovated village pump, some of the new Gateway signs, Midby Park  and the seven floral beds that have been planted on the periphery of the village.

The Chairperson of the In Bloom group Rebecca Biggart was delighted when she heard the news and explained that this award was for everyone who had helped to improve the village environment. She particularly thanked the village gardener Maddie Goudie for all her hard work over the last year, the work of the two Lifestyle groups Barrow Rangerz and the Crazy Crew and everyone who has helped with the monthly litter patrols including the Brownies. The judges were particularly impressed with the new gateway signs and the way that artist Bobbie Walkington had utilised the connection with John Harrison.  In their judging notes they also praised the efforts of the Better Barrow Community Project, particularly the Wheelbarrow Weekends and the plans for the Market Square.

The Barrow In Bloom group also presented some awards of their own. Janet Hughes of Millfields Way received a certificate for the Best Small Front garden display, Sargeant’s Butchers was awarded the Best Shop Front and the Six Bells won the Best Public House Floral display for their hanging baskets.

The In Bloom group is keen to hear from any businesses or groups who would like to sponsor new or enlarged flower beds or works of art. Monthly litter patrols will continue at weekends throughout the winter and the group would also like to encourage more people to join them to plan and to plant for next year’s competition. If you would like to help in any way please contact Irene Ballam 01469 531321 or email
