Actor Jeremy Irons is the latest well known name to lend his support to the fundraising appeal for a statue of John Harrison in Barrow-upon-Humber. Irons, one of the stars of the film Longitude which told the story of Harrison’s invention of the marine chronometer, joined a growing list of those wishing the Better Barrow Community Project success. Despite his groundbreaking work, which saved thousands of lives at sea, until Better Barrow launched its statue initiative, Harrison has no known memorial other than a plaque in Westminster Abbey.
More than £30,000 has already been raised towards the statue, with a further £40,000 required. Donations can be made by visiting the Donate page and don’t forget to enter the survey for where the statue should be located.
